Legacy

I want to read your journal,
Feel the deckled edges and
Read your innermost thoughts,
Decipher your soul.

With careful hands
I will lift each page
And note the ink smudges
That mar the fluid cursive.

I want to study each dotted “i”
And crossed “t”
In hopes of a hidden message
Addressed solely to me.

I want to read aloud each
Broken line and run on sentence,
Carefully pronouncing each tear drop
That stains the busy canvas of your world.

I want to notice missing,
Ripped out pages
That you feel must not be read
Even by yourself.

And with diligence and keen eyes
I will spot those creases and crossed out words,
And see the insecurities
You try to smother in a book.

Your written word is legacy.
I want to read your journal.
