Leschi, Chief of the Nisqually

There's no murder in war, or so they say,
Chief Leschi was hanged anyway
Kautz sought to deny Leschi's guilt,
examining where the blood had spillt
Tolmie petitioned throughout the Sound,
gathering support wherever found
the good Chieftain was tried, tried again,
until found guilty by twelve men
Leschi went to the gallows, he was to be hanged,
but sheriff Williams refused and was led off in chains
when they had at last laid to rest the mighty Chieftain,
the executioner said he'd killed an innocent man
there's no murder in war, or so they say,
Chief Leschi was hanged anyway
