Life

Once on a bright day
he looked at the clouds
and drew a picture of the figure he saw
it was lopsided and he called it “Coop”
because that was the name of his dog
and he was the only thing on his mind
he showed his drawing to his precious friend
and he drooled all over it
and his mother hung it on the kitchen door
for all to see and imagine
the adventures the two of them must have had that day
that was the year his new teacher
at that new school
let the class sing happy birthday to him
and his checkup at the doctor after Coop’s checkup at the vet
got him a lemon lollipop because secretly Coop loved citrus
and his father went hunting on the weekends but
always tucked him in bed at night
and was always there to do it

Once on a cloudy day
he looked at the clouds
and drew a picture of the jumbles he saw
it’s lines were tidy and he called it “Wonder”
because there must be something beyond what he saw
and that was the only thing on his mind
until he showed it to his dog
and he drooled all over it
but his mother never hung it on the kitchen door
because of the new paint
and at school the days seemed normal
until an argument turned to blows after Algebra class
that the teacher could have stopped sooner
if she hadn’t been on a phone call with her husband
and after a visit to the doctor after Coop’s visit at the vet
he got glasses with thick lenses and black frames
while Coop got a thick lump and a bleak frame
and his father stopped tucking him in bed at night
and he wondered if he would ever be there to do it

Once on a rainy day
he looked at the clouds
and drew a picture from the living room window
it was excellent and he called it “Absolutely Nothing”
because that’s what it was really all about
and that was the only thing on his mind
until he looked over at Coop’s bowl still filled
even though he was emptied into a hole
in the backyard
and his mother never hung it on the kitchen door
because he never showed her
but at least he had straight A’s in school
and got his drawings into the local art exhibit
and had scars on his wrists
because that was the thing to do
and at 2 am he tucked himself into bed
and forgot about wonder
and forgot about Coop
because from now on
that’s what it was really all about
and that was the only thing on his mind
