Like Glass
The heart is a fragile thing.
Memories of the past haunt me.
The cuts and bruises sting.
No one can handle it, not even a king.
Nobody has the true key.
The heart is a fragile thing.
Beaten and in need of a sling,
almost like a broken knee.
The cuts and bruises sting.
Like glass it's cracking and splitting.
Everyone just leaves it be.
The heart is a fragile thing.
All those words lingering
can't you see,
the cuts and bruises sting.
They are deep, and not healing.
Maybe it's just me...
My heart is a fragile thing.
My cuts and bruises sting.

I wrote this villanelle after one of the hardest breakups I have ever faced. He was my first love, and my first real heart break.
