Lilith

We hear your voice moan over Ur,
Fatehpu and Maya,
Daughter of night.
Created simultaneously
An opposite made, but undominated
The ideal of the dream
Too equal for Adam
You flew from his stubbornness
To an unjust punishment.

Come from your ruined cities
Consciousness of night,
Show us your benevolent side—
We have learned to trust our instincts now
And will not be confounded by reason.

Release us from the single vision
Of civilization. Shatter the wall
And reconcile us with Nature
Oh, mind of the wild,
Help us return the idols to the soil,
Be midwife for our rebirth
And help us return to the sensual earth.

Throw your power on the side of the low
Until wholeness is restored, open
The gates of empathy, let it mingle
With creativity. We open our hearts
To your spirit, Lilith.
