Lineage

My lineage tells me to hold my head high
Says I am the granddaughter of the mountain
A woman anchored in an ocean
Full of seaweed and dying reef
Full of vile men with their prides stiff

My lineage tells me to straighten my smile
Says I am the daughter of the wind
A woman with a light heart
Whose laugh leaves the sky howling
And rage makes lands anew

My lineage tells me to leave my shoes clean
Says I am the sister of the spring
A girl with a butterfly net
Catching all of mine that flutters
To plant them in her own garden

My lineage tells me to learn the ballad
Says I am the girl molded from their saga
Born alongside women of strength and mirth
Given no choice but to be fearless
In a fearful world
