Linger

You swirled your words around
until your tongue went numb
and your jaw got dizzy
and couldn't help but fall.
You spilled your words onto my shirt
I got the chills as they began to soak
leaving behind a stain that was wine red.
Long after I changed
and sunk into my bed
your words still lingered
as if they had flowed into my head.
Maybe I should have rinsed off your words right away
instead of folding up my shirt
and letting the stain stay.
For now red wine fills my blood-shot eyes
and it lingers in the footprints that I leave behind
all because I let your clumsy words
linger in my mind,
all because
I couldn't tell the words
goodbye.
