Love 101

Allow me just a moment please to share some things I’ve learned,
While sifting through this tangled life with seldom stone unturned,
Some joyous times, some sorrows too,
But what I must impart to you,
Is what some hearts find hard to do,
Let me show you how to love.

So long ago you gave up hope of finding something true,
And built a tidy solitude where none may pass but you,
Though open hearts do sometimes bleed,
This fracture does not supersede,
Our quest to fill that basic need,
Let me show you how to love.

And when I speak of love I don’t mean that insipid kind,
A love spoken in word without a matching deed behind,
I speak of love where tiny things,
Delight your senses, then sprout wings
And flit about like kites in spring,
Oh I’ll show you how to love.

At first we’ll lay a sturdy base of honesty and trust,
And plank by plank we’ll set a frame to withstand blame and gust,
Then once complete you’ll wonder how,
You ever let your heart allow
A life without it, don’t look now
But you’re learning how to love.

And should the world contest our love they’ll find that it won’t break,
Another glowing testament when precious time you take,
To manifest all that can be,
When leveed waters now run free,
O little dove, come fly with me!
I’ll show you how,
My love.
