Lullaby

My first night in the country
The tree frogs
Kept me awake with
Their loud insistent
Mating calls
All night long

My second night in the country
The tree frogs
Sang me to sleep
Their rhythm a fitting lullaby
At the end of a day
Spent walking in
The woods

My third night in the country
The cold set in
And rain beat violently
Upon the window panes
The tree frogs
Were silent
And I could not
Sleep
