Mary Ellen Who

Mary Ellen who sings throughout the house like an angel
And asks why people can be so unkind
Who is a soft, comforting blanket
Who is a dove fluttering on the horizon
Who's eyes are wide with wonder
Is a diligent woman
Who tells me to focus on my studies
Who tells me not to worry about a thing
Who's hands are my mittens
No longer laughs like she used to
No longer smiles like she used to
Frequently escapes the house
Is sad
Is the buckets of rain falling from the sky
Is trying to hide her tears
Barely talks to us anymore
Is arguing and yelling
Who tells me to stay out of it
Is shattered glass, open wounds
Who paces back and forth and back and forth again
Is an angel singing in my mind
Asking why people are so unkind.
Why so unkind, why?
