Mate

Mate
Tiffany Marcum

Your skin is kissed by the sun
you also want a life with fun
your skin may be darker, but still holds beauty
maybe it tastes like Galilee

I meet you on a beach
you approached me
I did not know if you were the real thing
I was candid and jaded
your profile never faded
I called your name
in language the same
sounded so strong
God, please don’t be wrong!
You are special, planted in roots
tell me your stories, I’ll get the books

You smiled so brightly I had to look away
please don’t ask me to smile,
my teeth aren’t that great anyway
It’s a pet peeve, I’d run away from you, miles
there is no pitter patter,
now or ever,
but that doesn’t matter
