An elfin, inquisitive girl
Whose sparkling eyes, rosy cheeks, and
Spirited voice

Delight her grandparents and
Warm the souls of even the cynical
Clenches her mother's flowing skirt
Seeking reassurance
Whose life is measured by inches on the wall;

Falling to sleep, she drifts
Into the captivating, surreal dream
Of her childhood;

Memories of joy, hope, and fear
Flutter across her mind
Like migrating Canadian geese
She awakens to the twilight hours
Of her youth;

A last glimpse at an elusive time
Leaving home today, she has
Become a fragile butterfly
Bursting from her cocoon.
