Mine Forever

On an ordinary Thursday morning,
a new word entered my life
and became mine forever.
Tattooed on my heart.
And the word was big,
And the word was heavy;
And the word made my blood run cold.
And the word was cancer.
And then quickly, far too quickly-
so quickly I couldn't breathe,
more words entered my life.
Remission and relapse.
PICC line and Hickman line.
Cytarabine, Cytoxan and Busulfan.
Bald.
Bone marrow biopsy and bone marrow transplant.
And then slowly, far too slowly,
after many dark days and many desperate nights,
another new word entered my life
and became mine forever-
Tattooed on my heart.
And the word was big,
And the word was strong.
And the word was beautiful...
And the word was survivor.
