Moments of Darkness

Top down, music blaring on my car's radio,
Speakers pounding to the beat, I tap my fingers,
It's a great day to be alive.
A news report brings it to a stop.

Live report, breaking news-
There has been a shooting.
Twenty-seven people dead
Is this what man has come to?

An average day of joy and fun
Interrupted by bullets, innocence gone.
Sadness, fear, death-
Unnecessary cruelty of man.

I change the station, music rings,
Thoughts still numb with dread.
Begging peace, contemplating, yearning

Lyrics have lost their luster,
Tragedy is all around
Blind to suffering like a dark cave.
Devastation's scheming ecstasy.
