Mother

I kissed a girl in
second grade
and wished that I'd continue
until you opened your eyes
and noticed the signs
of what I desired.

I stopped believing in God
when I was five years old
because you grabbed me
and shook me
and made me realize he
wasn't real.

I couldn't stop my moods
from swaying
or the sadness to grab hold
and the happiness to overflow,
but you still told me what you always
told me:

"You're not real."
