Grandpa, Up

I can never forget this story, I can’t
On a day in 1995 or 1996
But really a night, when I was sleeping
Unaware that the angels were coming
To see me

I woke up, and looked at the light in the hallway
As I wondered how it was left on
And then the lights formed, like a rainbow
I said, “It’s grandpa up,” my grandpa Jack
Who I called grandpa up because he lived upstairs
From me when I was born

And he died just 6 months after the day I was born
And my mom told me I took my first steps on that June day
But I was born 6 months earlier on a November morning

His name was Jack and my name was Jackie
And I looked to my mom to wake her up
To show her the lights
But she slept with silver stars around her head
Like a crown

And the lights moved
And I knew
I would never forget
