My Best Friend

When he took the last breath, I knew it was real.
I had not only lost my father, but the most important man in
the world. The devastation was overpowering, the room was spinning,
and my heart was racing. The only man I have ever known was
no longer sitting on his thrown. My mother by his side,
holding on for dear life.
As the tears rolled down my cheek, I could no longer speak.
We had to say our goodbyes; the doctors could no longer try.
When I heard the monitor flat line, I knew this was our last time.
As I kissed his forehead, I simply bent over and said,
"I love you and I'll miss you,
you'll always be my best friend."
