My Closet

Naked, I step into the darkness of my closet
I turn on the light faster than fear or claustrophobia can take hold
The light confronts me with a space created and filled over
many years
Belts lurk like nooses and scarves wait to wrap around my neck
I trip over all the different shoes I have walked in
My fingertips feel the interwoven fabrics. Some rough and scratchy,
some soft and gentle, some warm and cozy
Old clothes, new clothes, clothes that no longer fit but I cannot
let go of
I choose who I want to be today
As I turn and look at my reflection, I am amused at how distorted
the mirror is
Clothed, I step out into the world
