My First Big Conference

The daunting red letters greeted me as I made my way in
Hundreds of faces poured into my view
Covered with wooly fabric as a response to the chilly weather,
They wore a variety of expressions.
The blushing round ones conveyed anxiousness and doubt
And the slick and skinny ones spoke of confidence and excitement
The range of emotions was not peculiar,
But the determination oozing through their pores was
Conference time was getting closer
And like clockwork, acts feigning confidence began to flood the lobby
Whether by the straightening of their posture
Or through “pleasant” mingling with one another
Students quickly embodied the diplomatic facade they would use for the next 3 days
It was at this exact moment that I was given indisputable evidence
Of just how persistent and relentless my competition was going to be
