My Giving Tree

Summer ended and autumn approached us
all your leaves had fallen
and all that’s left is the memories of what used to be,
where I left you with nothing
but a scar where I carved my heart into you
with a pocket knife of broken dreams and promises,
now I lay in the dead of night
wondering who’s keeping you warm,
keeping you company, wondering whose loving you
I’m sad laying in my bed feeling hollow,
my mind says it’s time to move on,
now I walk a dark and lonely road
leaving a trail of broken hearts behind me
while I try to find my way back home to you,
I’m a sad and lonely fool,
with nothing left but room to show
of these mistakes I made
all I wanted was love
but instead I used you up
when all you wanted to be was my giving tree
