My Gold Medal

By

I hid my gold medal
So well I can't find it
So who will believe
I am an award winning poet?
Perhaps I can convince you
Through my use of metaphor
Or my wry wit
Or I can show you
The blackened stump
Where my happiness used to be.
I can stand before you
But you will see only pieces of me
Like a shattered mirror
And if you are not careful
You may touch a jagged edge
Or see in a shard your face
Reflected back in a clear light.
I hope what you see is pretty.
If I knew where I hid my gold medal
I would wear it so it would cover
The missing pieces of my broken heart
You may see me smiling
But that is just an act
Let me know if I am fooling you.
