My Light

By Melmond

This was never my intention.
It hit completely by surprise.
Not something I sought after,
Nor in deepest dreams devise.

We first met - it meant nothing.
No spark or sweet song played -
No tear-eyed infatuation,
Heart not in the least was swayed.

Was weeks later when I helped you -
Stayed several hours by your side.
Only then I got to know you,
Slowly then, I would decide -

I wished to know you better,
Friendship quickly then had formed.
Over months I got to know you,
Was then that my heart had warmed.

Every time we were together,
Though even when we'd talk apart -
Your voice, your smile, your laughter,
Each would stoke my beating heart.

One Monday morn, I professed love,
And asked you for a kiss.
You never answered clearly,
Yet I knew I'd been dismissed.

Despite my awkward misstep,
You allowed me as your friend.
Thank you for your forgiveness,
I've tried to make amends.

Though my affection hasn't changed,
Despite best efforts to restrain,
Love you more than simple friendship,
Feelings I can't fake nor feign.

I still hope to keep you always,
As a friend I hold most dear -
I wish you a world of happiness,
And a light-filled bright New Year
