My Rock Star

Cover me with kisses.
Hug me through this pain.
Is there really sunshine
after all this rain?

Mama, I love you.
You've always been my friend.
What will I do now?
On whom will I depend?

You have always been my rock,
my confidant, and my strength.
Who will I find now
to go that extra length?

Nobody will ever take your place,
so much love and so full of grace.
And from my heart, you will never be far,
for in heaven, you'll be the brightest star.

This Poems Story

I am a retired math teacher. I now care for my mother who has Alzheimer's disease. My mother is an incredible person. She practiced anesthesiology until her retirement at seventy. She has always been an inspiration for me and for women in her field. She was the only woman in her medical school class. She always said, "You can be anything you want to be as long as you're willing to work hard." I cherish every moment with her as we both go through "the long good-bye." My poem was written in tears for my best friend.
