My Roots Are Firmly Planted

My roots are firmly planted
I am told that I am flawed
My speech, my walk, my look is misrepresented as arrogance
Yet I stand through ignorance and speak loud
For my roots are firmly planted
I stand on holy ground that was built on oppression
Birthed with unmatched resiliency
My future secured by the original MLK
His death was the first non-violence movement
Through him my roots are firmly planted
Lord, your words are soft, your silence speaks
It's your peace I seek
I want to walk in your journey
Feel your triumphs, tell your story
Society's standards and rules have replaced morality
Evading incarceration, gang affiliation while building self-efficacy
I survive because my roots are firmly planted
