Naked Sadness

I remember the crack in her voice
A soft wound slowy grating against reality's jagged surface
Truth seaped from her lips
I beheld naked sadness, face to face
Numb I listened, played the supportive role
Not accepting the beginning of the systematic destruction
Everything that I knew, everything safe
Pressing on, a barefoot orphan
Along the cold and muddy streets of losing
Helpless to change her lot
