As a young black girl, I was given the name sable
To represent my life, my heart, and my only
As a girl my name grew from black girl to negress child
Fairer ones told me that it was a name of honor and respect
And I had it all the while
While I was a young girl I was once called a darkened youth
The darkest ones told me that others would always be
filled with wandering hatred and for their pride,
there was nothing they wouldn't do
When I was a girl, I was told by others that I was a niggra
The fairest ones told me that it was a term of endearment
The way God wanted it
And the way that everyone expressed their love
As a young black girl the dark ones told me that
I would always be what I was born to be
But in my heart
I wanted to be free...
