Not All Poetry Makes You Smile

one more kiss before i go, love
another smile for the road
because it's rare for me to see these things
unless we're alone

your laugh is as lonely as a dry ocean
killing time is a specialty of yours
but i miss the parts of you i've never met
when you sit in the dark and pretend you never feel

i see the longing in your eyes
when you lay on your back and stare at the sky
more than anything i wish i could be
what you looked at with that lost face

god knows i've missed you a million nights
and the things i've written could make a ice heart melt
but i'd never read them to you
because i want to protect you from things i know you'll fight
darling, you were only mine for a night
