Ode to a 17-year-old Daughter

She hovers on the brink of adulthood,
filled with youthful dreams
and aspirations.
She faces the awesome promise
of the future
with trepidation,
with anticipation,
then suddenly turns back
to embrace again
the comforts of her past.
Vacillating,
wavering,
she impatiently flings off
the yoke of her childhood,
but still reaches out
for the security of all her yesterdays.
Hesitant,
yet anxious to accept
the challenge of tomorrow,
she steps through the looking-glass
to follow her own vision of reality.
My little Alice in Wonderland,
are you really ready
for the fall down the rabbit hole?
