Ode to a Stranger

I never did meet you today
I could've said hey
But instead I continued to walk
And therefore did not talk
Whether on a train or New York's busy streets
My head chose to face the concrete
Never meeting your gaze because from the age of four
Our parents always underscore
That strangers are danger
So you will always be a stranger
But what if one day I whispered hello
And you went with the flow
Well maybe I'd have a new friend
No longer a stranger in the end
