Ode to Red Badge

If breath ceased because of battle
Death seemed to ring of glory
Pursuit of my inner man
In wondrous war to write my story

But after I witnessed all the horror
A dance with death was not enticing
Courageous comrades killed
Nor a curtain of blood exciting

I grew to hate my boots
Despise my buckles and my buttons
I found a man in me
But not through my first assumption

Afraid of fear no longer;
That is when I first began
The journey of discovering
My beginning of a man
