Ode to taking off braces

Tooth-shackle pried
from the pity bone.
Your speech is fluid,
the tongue not barred.
Your smile bright
like the sunlit window.
Today you’re a display
of the marvel of change.
The reveal:
a set of white soldiers.
O how the human chain
was made to make
your natural beauty
even more of a gem.

This Poems Story

My friend took off her braces after years and her new look struck me as something deeper than just an aesthetic change.
