On the Classical Poets

If I had a pen
like those pens of long ago!
If I had a mind
like those minds that held them,oh!

If I could use,as they could use,
That pen to grasp the heart's deep muse,
Or tell the tales that they could tell-
(Were it but only half so well!)
Translated from the mind to page;
Then hold them there from age to age!
If I was able to,as they,
So wondrously those thoughts convey-
Such thoughts in words so rich,so deep,
Their reader captive,enthralled,keep!

I suppose,though,then,
being I have not,can not,
Yet now I shall find
and employ the best I've got!
