One Chance

Her mind touched with tentative tongue
The lakeless sorrow
That lay cradled
In the stunned and ligamented
Chamber of her head
While the zigzag line between real and unreal
Hovered in vertical abeyance, and her thoughts
Ticking back and forth, said
Enough of this, enough
Retreating to the possible:
Life insurance, will, trust,
How she would have traded those dollars
For one last word, no--
One chance to hold him
While his light died
