One Tiny Tear

If the trail of one tiny
solitary tear were to be
traced back up the cheek
onto which it has fallen
back into the eye and down
whatever path led it from the
heart where it was born and
lived until it was ejected into
the world, what story might
be found in that one tiny
tear -- one of love and joy
or of torment and pain which
in any other circumstance
might fill an ocean but is
here condensed by years
of pressure and now rolls
from the eye as the chest
constricts with all the effort
required to stifle a sob before
it is summarily eliminated by
the simple swipe of the back
of a hand as if it never existed.
