Oneness

In the womb
we drift and roll
in our small ocean
to the constant rhythm
of heart and breath.
We listen for the familiar voice.

When she laughs and sings
and her dreams are sweet,
we are in perfect harmony with her.
When her time draws near
and she cannot sleep,
she gazes at the full moon
and watches for the slow stars.

We both feel the ancient pull
and connection to the cosmos.
Her moods pulse and ripple
through our watery world.
We are one with her
and one with all that is.

This Poems Story

My husband and I live on a small farm on Virginia's Eastern Shore. The natural world has always been the source of my inner strength and inspiration. Much of my writing reflects this. My work as a birth doula (birthing assistant) inspired me to write "Oneness." As a doula I guide women back to their instinctual trust in the ability of their body, mind and spirit to birth naturally, with as few medical interventions as possible. My goal is to have them experience labor and delivery as a natural, safe process, not a medical diagnosis to be feared.
