Passing Through

On a moonless night
In a lifeless place
A street lies still
Buildings surround
Blocking the place from the rest

The street holds its breath
As a girl walks through
Her feet are bare, callused and cut
Her clothes are ragged
Her hair unwashed

This place seems like a good one to rest
For it is still, and blocked from view
And who will care for a girl passing through?
The shadows reach out
Prompting the girl to stay

This place is dark, and it is scary
And going on seems impossible
The shadows are inviting, begging her to rest
The girl holds her head high, and she walks on
