pink elephants

tossing and turning
and reaching for more
one sock off
and falling to the floor

a paper under the tongue
and a knife in the heart
what brought you together
may tear you apart

bodies in the streets
wishing it were you
but you have to get home, there’s so much to do

finishing the dishes
and grabbing a spoon
hoping she's still too young to notice the elephant
in the room
