please turn on the lights

My monsters no longer hide in closets
Easily vanquished by heroic adults
And the flick of a light

No
My monsters have grown up with me
Learned new strategies for fear
As I overcame their old tactics

And as they trained together
Like soldiers preparing for war
They vacated the closet
And moved into a new home inside of me

And now every day
I hear them bickering among themselves
On the best ways to reduce me to rubble again

And once I fall to pieces
Their work isn’t done
They won’t stop until there is no hope
For me to pull the pieces
Back together again

Until I am dust
Beneath their clawed feet
