Ready to Let You Go

Sometimes when I think of you it doesn't hurt anymore.
But that isn't always the case, a fact I can't ignore.
My heart aches every once in a while.
Though, I have to admit our past often makes me smile.
I finally allow myself to think of you as long as it isn't too often.
Only because your memory makes my seemingly strong heart soften.
It has taken me too long to build this shield,
The one that protects the pieces of my heart that haven't healed.
Life must go on. Eventually, I have to let you go.
No more pretending. No more putting on a show.
I wish you the best, I swear I do.
I love you enough to want that for you.
So go on and be happy, and wish me the same,
But just know my heart will always be etched with your name.
