Retail Dreams

The pavement expands for miles in each direction
As I watch from my contractual chain
These locks are sealed with a signature
And I can't afford to be late or absent

Working up a little extra gas money
Between the bleeps of the computer
I watch as the strangers slide across the horizon
Speeding indefinitely into the sunset

I can hear their streams scratch through the soundscape
Talk radio, pop songs, arguments
Glimpses into their private lives trail after them
Trying not to be forgotten
How I wish to be a part of their caravans

To have somewhere to go
To have somewhere to be
To get up and look forward to that day's adventure

But I will be here
Scanning away
Compressing the line on the sales floor
One scan at a time

One scan at a time
