Ring Song

We fell in love: two pebbles dropped into a lake.
Can you see the rings that now begin to quake
over waters wakened by the splash our two hearts make?
Their liquid borders are quick to mingle, overlap, and sweetly break
into one bright blur that time will smooth
into a newborn shining face.
Think of the secret rings carved in the tree
that, on the day you took my hand
and lit it with this shining band,
furnished a lush and lovely screen.
Our future too will be engraved.
Each year a circus ring of living braved,
then sheathed by time and history to stand:
a free organic thing that offers shade.
There are sounds that have a ring,
that catch the light,
that sparkle, as bright
as this diamond I wear.
I leave you with the sheen of these words in the air.
I love you.
