S T R A N G E R S

we’ve been raised to believe
all forms of abandonment and hurt
can only come from those we’ve known
the longest, the strongest bonds
but reality has proven time and time again
we can be abandoned in the smallest ways
and here we stand as proof
its sting is just as strong
those that enter our lives for a moment
turn then gone
we bleed, cry, unravel
hurt that they didn’t give us the chance
they didn’t know us
but we wanted them to know all
abandonment from love that I can understand
a purpose, underlying or spoken reason
but the passerby leaves so fast
we never mattered
but that matters
for a strangers gaze may see the honest truth
and now that’s all I see in me
