Safe Distance

Safe Distance

How is it that fear
Holds such an influence
On those who, once, roamed free?
"Who are you," I wonder,
"To have such power over me?"
I speak out through a mask
Which is required, somehow,
Before I am allowed to breathe.
Where went the freedom
I, once, celebrated,
But for which I grieve, now?
How may I dare
To enter into a once-crowded
Shopping mall?
Is there any reason
To any of this at all?
By what law am I allowed
To walk a sidewalk
Less than six feet wide?
How do I carry all of this
Doubt and resentment, deep inside?
