Scarring Memories

I shut my eyes and it all came flooding back,
the pain, the cries for help.
I wish this wasn't the way the world worked.
Palms sweating, legs tremoring, voice shrieking,
whenever they are in my thoughts I am somewhere else.
I shut my eyes and it all came flooding back.
I didn't save them,
I must have done something wrong.
I wish this wasn't the way the world worked.
Buildings fell, dictatorships crumbled,
but parents lost children.
I shut my eyes and it all came flooding back.
I have known no harmony, no reconciliation, no truce
only remonstrance and bereavement.
I wish this wasn't the way the world worked.
Replaying the bloodshed over and over,
my mind has become suffused with grief.
I shut my eyes and it all came flooding back.
I wish this wasn't the way the world worked.
