Season of Solitude

I like it in the winter
When the darkness rolls in
Eclipsing the holiday heat

Ghosts migrate to the center of my mind
To replay the last year on a loop

I befriend the melancholy of memory
Finding clarity in the fog of the gloom
Holding onto comfort in the corners of my conscience
The way you find comfort in a hidden corner of the world
Undisturbed by modern matters

I sense more sincerity in the cold
Than a beach with broken promises
More beauty in the corpse of a tree
Than the outward vibrance of a hibiscus

A solidarity in this season of solitude
Limbs shaking off the burden of a summer too suffocating
Freedom from pretending to shine in the shimmer of the sun

Satisfied by the fleeting silence
Safe for now in the shadows of my soul
