Selfless Moments

When all distractions are stripped away,
When all support begins to fade,
When the chips are down, and you're too weak to fight,
Your will and heart are dimming in light,
You're left with yourself, and nothing more,
You're pondering what you lived for,
Weathered, weary, and sore,
That's when you find your core.
Who you are, and what you value, begins to come clear.
A life well lived draws peace not fear.
A life of selfish pursuits is revealed to be wasted years.
That's when you get right down to it,
Purified from all influence.
I imagine it's not what you died for that's of most importance,
But who you lived for in your most selfless moments.
