silenced.

put your legs down, i am warned
no girl should compromise the dignity
of her family by showing herself off like that.
what am i to do if dignity is placed
along the ridges of my curves.
what am i to do i question
do not ask questions
i am hushed
no girl should question.
i nod.

and so at the age of five
i was taught not to open up.
do not get me wrong
i was not treated harshly
or punished severely.
instead i was told
with words of love
and that is what
made it truer.
