Sixth Grade Spelling Bee

I remember I was last,
the final to audition.
Yet I made it past
with little effort given.
Now I was on the list,
I had to compete
and there was much more to it
than the people I had to beat!
I remember I was fourth,
I came right after third.
Every round I stepped forth
and correctly spelled my word.
The line was dwindling down,
my opponents coming up short.
Nervously my heart would pound
although I continued to score.
I remember I was number two,
and number one didn't get it right.
I didn't know if it was true,
was winning within my sight?
The spelling bee was almost done,
there was excitement in my face!
I raised the trophy I had won,
I remember I was first place.
