Skunked on Whales

By

After a typical rainy day at the Oregon Coast
we enjoyed three days of beautiful sunshine
Even the wind cooperated
by mostly staying away

Day after day, we looked in our usual locations
Scanning the seas for our favorite cetaceans
Boiler Bay, Depoe Bay, Rocky Creek
"D" River, Roads End, Otter Crest Loop
Even out our clean motel room window
No spouts, no tails, no bodies of the marvelous giants
Nary a whale to be seen!

I hope it's a fluke occurrence
This absence of gray whales
There's something about these intelligent behemoths
that feels good to me
I feel a connection to them
and to the sea
