Son of a Slave

I'm the son of slave
I'm proud to own it
I ain't ashamed, no not one bit

I'm the son of a slave
living proof to let you know
How my father got here ten generations ago

I'm the son of a slave
was raised not to forget
How my father resisted and felt the sting of the whip

I'm the son of a slave
got a survivor's mind-set
Think how my mother was beaten on that human cargo ship

I'm the son of a slave
was taught never to quit
My parents showed me with love how not to be broken by hate

I'm the son of a slave
had my native tongue taken away
And had a brother tossed overboard and used for shark bait

I'm the son of a slave
was taught to thank God and always pray
And my sister, who later was sold, was taught exactly the same

I'm the son of a slave
I'm that long-ago forgotten debt
I've been swept under the rug, then told I only got myself to blame

I'm the son of a slave
who's been waiting, but still ain't got paid yet
I'm the curse that's coming, that impending shipwreck

I'm the son of a slave
let these facts become well-known
The message has been delivered
it has been written in stone

This poem is dedicated to my father and mother
